Oracle8i Online Generic Documentation CD-ROM Installation and Usage Notes Release 3 (8.1.7) |
|
This CD-ROM contains the online generic documentation library for Oracle8i, Release 3. You will also see the release number referred to as "Release 8.1.7" in this document and in some of the generic documentation. The two release designations are equivalent, and in some places this release is referred to as "Release 3 (8.1.7)".
The documentation on this CD-ROM is available in HTML and PDF formats. This document describes the contents of the CD-ROM and provides instructions for installing and viewing the documentation. It also includes information about ordering hardcopy documentation and contacting customer support.
This CD-ROM is a Rock Ridge/Joliet/ISO9660 hybrid CD, which should be readable by all computers which support one of those standards.
For information about new features in this release, see the on-line manual Oracle8i Documentation Addendum. For information about new features in Oracle8i, see the online manual Getting to Know Oracle8i.
This CD-ROM contains all of the the documentation listed in the tables in this section. Each title is preceded by the part number of the manual.
Some manuals which include multiple printed volumes (such as Oracle8i Concepts or Oracle8i SQL Reference) are presented as a single manual in online form. The part number included here refers to the multi-volume set.
The documentation on the CD-ROM is divided into the following top-level categories:
Some of the documentation categories are further divided into subcategories. For example, the "Server and SQL*Plus" category is subdivided into the following subcategories: "Concepts, Administration, and Reference," "Backup and Recovery," "SQL*Plus", "Data Warehousing," and "Distributed Databases."
Some manuals in the library have not been updated for this release. The header at the top of each HTML page indicates the most recent revision for that document, as does the title page of each PDF file. An asterisk (*) by a title in the following tables indicates that a manual is from Release 8.1.6 and that some updated information for Release 8.1.7 can be found in the Oracle8i Documentation Addendum.
If a part number is enclosed in square brackets ([ ]), this indicates that this is an online-only document (HTML and/or PDF) which is not available as a hard-copy manual.
The following tables list all the documentation on this CD. Some documents are cross-listed in multiple categories for more convenient access.

You may choose to install the documentation onto your local system, or you can read the files directly from the CD-ROM without installing them. You need one of the tools listed in the following table to view the documentation from either location.
Note: Acrobat Reader is available for free download from the Adobe web site (http://www.adobe.com/) for the following platforms: Mac OS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 3.1x, Sun Solaris SPARC, Sun Solaris x86, DEC Alpha, HP-UX, IBM AIX, SGI IRIX, Linux, and OS/2 Warp.
The disk space requirements for installing the on-line documentation are listed in the table below. For Release 8.1.7, the only installation option is to install the complete HTML and PDF documentation set. It is not possible to customize the installation.
Format | Disk Space Required for Installation |

The documentation on this CD-ROM can be viewed directly from the CD, or you can install it on a local system. You can install the documents from this CD-ROM onto your local system in either of two ways:
Note: The installation components on this CD-ROM are not compatible with pre-Oracle8i versions of the Oracle Installer. You must use the Oracle Universal Installer, which is new with Oracle8i.
The simplest installation method is a direct file copy from the CD-ROM to your local system. Use your operating system's commands to copy the contents of the DOC
directory on the CD-ROM to the appropriate installation directory on your system.
Solaris Only: If you install both the platform-specific documentatio(from the product CD) and the generic documentation (from the generic documentation CD-ROM) into the same location, the Oracle Universal Installer will create a combined documentation installation for you. The top-level products.htm files from both libraries will be merged into a single products.htm page which will give you access to both the Solaris and the generic documentation. You can access the documentation by loading products.htm or index.htm (which launches the Oracle Information Navigator Java search applet).
See the Oracle8i Installation Guide for your platform for instructions on how to install and launch the Oracle Universal Installer.
When the installer prompts you to select a product to install, navigate to the CD-ROM and locate the file
/INSTALL/docs_817.jar
Use this file as the basis for your installation.
The location of the installed documentation files is determined according to the following rules:
ORACLE_DOC
is defined in the environment, the files are installed in that directory. Note that the summary screen of the Installer may still show your ORACLE_HOME
path as the installation destination, but the documentation will be installed in ORACLE_DOC
.
ORACLE_DOC
is not defined, but ORACLE_BASE
is defined, the files are installed under the $ORACLE_BASE/doc
directory.
ORACLE_DOC
nor ORACLE_BASE
is defined in the environment, the files are installed under the $ORACLE_HOME/doc
directory.
You can install the documentation on this CD-ROM onto your local system, or you can view the documentation directly from the CD-ROM. See "Tools Requirements" for information about the tools necessary to view the documentation.
The Oracle Information Navigator (OIN) is a Java applet which is provided both on the CD-ROM and as part of the installed documentation. It provides a "tree" view of the documentation library for random file access and allows you to perform searches across the library. For more information on using OIN, see "Using the Oracle Information Navigator (OIN)". OIN uses HTML frames.
Note: If you have problems running OIN, or you would like to view the documentation without frames, please see the note under Step 1 about viewing the documentation without OIN.
To view the HTML and PDF documentation from a local installation or from the CD-ROM, follow these steps:
index.htm
file within the installed documentation directory, or within the /DOC
directory on the CD-ROM.
Note: The "PDF Directory" bookmark at the top of each manual's PDF bookmark list is only valid if you have opened the file directly, using Acrobat, or have navigated to it using the PDF index. See "Viewing PDF Documentation Without a Browser" for information.
You can randomly access files in the documentation library using the Oracle Information Navigator's "tree" view. You can also use the OIN's search capabilities to search through the documentation library . The OIN requires a frames-enabled, Java-enabled web browser. To start using the Information Navigator, point your browser to:
/DOC/index.htm
on the CD-ROM
$ORACLE_DOC/index.htm
for installed documentation. If you did not install the documentation in ORACLE_DOC
, adjust the path accordingly.
When you open one of these pages in your browser, the OIN applet loads, and the OIN utility displays in a separate window. If the OIN window is not visible after loading, it may be behind the main browser window.
NOTE: The OIN may not be fully compatible with all browser, platform, and Java environment configurations. If you run into difficulties, you may choose to view the documentation without the OIN. The OIN also uses HTML frames, so if you wish to view the documentation without frames, you should view the documentation without OIN. To view the documentation without launching OIN, load the top-level file products.htm
instead of index.htm
.
For information on how to use the Information Navigator, click on the Help button in the Information Navigator window. The help screens display in the main browser window.
It is possible to view the PDF documentation without using a web browser. To do so, follow these steps:
/DOC/index.pdf
file on the CD-ROM, or the top-level index.pdf
file in your installed documentation. From this index file you can navigate to all of the PDF documentation on the CD-ROM. Each of the PDF files also contains a "PDF Directory" bookmark at the top of the bookmark list. Clicking on this bookmark takes you up one level in the PDF index hierarchy.
The documentation in the PDF index files is divided into the same categories as the HTML documentation. See "CD-ROM Contents and Documentation Part Numbers" for information about the different categories.
You can also open an individual PDF file directly without browsing through the PDF index pages. To do so, follow these steps:
a12345.pdf
). A list of the part numbers is available in the section "CD-ROM Contents and Documentation Part Numbers". PDF files are located within the following directories:
On the CD-ROM:
/DOC/addendum.817
for the Oracle8i Documentation Addendum
/DOC/mix.817
for the Master Index and Master Glossary
/DOC/server.817
for Server and SQL*Plus documentation
/DOC/appdev.817
for Application Development documentation
/DOC/network.817
for Directory, Networking, and Security documentation

for Oracle Enterprise Manager documentation
/DOC/inter.817
for interMedia, Spatial, Time Series and Visual Information Retrieval documentation
/DOC/java.817
for Java documentation
/DOC/webdb.817
for WebDB documentation
Installed on your local system:
$ORACLE_DOC/addendum.817
for the Oracle8i Documentation Addendum
$ORACLE_DOC/mix.817
for the Master Index and Master Glossary
$ORACLE_DOC/server.817
for Server and SQL*Plus documentation
$ORACLE_DOC/appdev.817
for Application Development documentation
$ORACLE_DOC/network.817
for Directory, Networking, and Security documentation
$ORACLE_DOC/ois.817
for Oracle Integration Server documentation
$ORACLE_DOC/em.817
for Oracle Enterprise Manager documentation
$ORACLE_DOC/paraserv.817
for Parallel Server documentation
$ORACLE_DOC/inter.817
for interMedia, Spatial, Time Series and Visual Information Retrieval documentation
$ORACLE_DOC/java.817
for Java documentation
$ORACLE_DOC/webdb.817
for WebDB documentation
Note: If you did not install the documentation in ORACLE_DOC
, adjust the path accordingly.
So, for example, to view the Oracle8i SQL Reference directly, without using a browser or the index.pdf
files, you would first look up the category and part number of the document in the tables earlier in this document. That manual is in the "Server and Data Warehousing" category, and the part number is a76989. So you would then open the /DOC/server.817/a76989.pdf
file on your CD, or the corresponding file in your installed documentation.
